More Than Play—Why Recess Matters

The era when teachers gladly ushered children out the door for recess may not be entirely gone, but it is threatened by pressures related to school funding, curriculum priorities and lack of facilities available for play. People from earlier generations tend to remember with fondness when recess was a tradition so ingrained in schools that it was practically a component of education.

Benefits of recess

The key component of recess that is different than physical education classes is unstructured play. Children, unhindered by rules and given the right environment to interact, talk at will and exercise in playful ways, receiving all sorts of benefits that aren’t usually charted or documented by tests or other measurements.

Just as adults derive benefits such as stress release and increased strength and stamina from exercise, children need to move their bodies and raise their heart rates during a school day or other structured activity.

As a mother of 3 elementary school-age children, I feel that recess is such an important part of the day for all of them. They learn so many valuable lessons during recess and I do not like to hear about schools cutting recess time or limiting the children’s unstructured playtime. I read an article 3 years ago in the Tampa Bay Times about why recess is to important to give up. Every parent should read it and begin to look at the school their children attend and analyze their schedule. I believe in the power of letting children play and the Fit Kids Playground program fully supports the unstructured play movement.

“Our children need some peace in their day, some free time, some time to just be kids. That is their right.”- Meg Rosker, Founder of Let Children Play
