As the Food Revolution Ambassadors for Tampa Bay and for Fit Kids everywhere, we will be trying to engage more with you as a community to bring you more ways to get your fit kids involved in eating healthy. Again, remember the Fit Kids motto is “Real Kids. Real Change. Really Simple.” The official Food Revolution blog always has a monthly challenge that is issued to it’s ambassadors and in turn we would love you connect with us and help inspire others too! So join in! Play along! Trying something new is always fun!

As we head into November, they’ve got a new set of challenges for us! Bring on November!

November’s Monthly Challenges

1. Slow Cooking! We live in a fast food world, but this month we’re asking you to slow things down, try out and share your slow cooked food recipes with us. Challenge submitted by ambassador Christina Erickson

2. N is for November, and nectarines, and nutmeg… we want to see your recipes for dishes beginning with the letter N or using ingredients with the letter N. Challenge submitted by ambassador Jackie Rebideau

3. Share your holiday traditions. Holiday season is almost upon and we want to know what your holiday traditions are and what food makes it to the table for your family gatherings. Send us your photos of traditional recipes, foods and the table set for a holiday feast!

Be on the look out via our social channels for prizes to help share your challenges with our audience! We can’t wait to see what’s in store!

What are Monthly Challenges?

Every month, there will be different challenges that inspire Food Revolutionaries to engage with their communities. They are designed to make deeper connections with the thought leaders in the real food industry and connect with family and friends through fresh food.

This is how we work with Food Revolution and how we engage the Tampa Bay community: At the beginning of every month, the challenges will be announced on the official Food Revolution Blog. The idea is to complete as many challenges as you can. As you complete the challenges, let us know how they went. We want to hear your stories, see your pictures and be able to show your successes through our various social media platforms. So get out there, have fun and make sure you share your story with us here in Tampa too – we could be highlighting what you’ve been doing to the world!

Stay connected with us on Twitter at @FoodRevTampa on on Facebook too!

Marketing Healthy Foods to Children

No Comments #fitkids, Childhood Obesity, Fit Kids, Healthy Eating, Opinion, Tips

Marketing products to children using familiar characters is a way to get kids attracted to certain items. Banking on familiarity, kids are naturally drawn to items that their “heroes” are touting. “If it is good enough for Superman, it is good enough for me,” are what kids are thinking. Also, products know that the moment they begin to use licensed characters (which you must have rights to do) they know their product will see, what I refer to as the “Oprah Effect.” (I am sure there are sales reports to show a spike in sales once the product has been associated with a familiar children’s character-take your pick on which one.)

But now, it is time to use this marketing power for good. Hearing today that Sesame Workshop will allow the Produce Marketing Association to use their muppet characters to help market fruits and vegetables comes at no surprise. Although, I am thrilled to hear that they will be waiving licensing fees for PMA’s growers to use the familiar characters. This is great news. And with the First Lady’s Let’s Move initiative behind this new partnership, this is definitely a step in the right direction.

I welcome the opportunity to teach my preschooler about healthy eating at every meal we have together. Each time I eat with my children, is another chance I get to talk about food: why we eat, why what we eat should be healthy, why we should eat healthy food, and so on. Fit Kids Playground is a supporter of Sesame Workshop and their Healthy Habits for Life initiative. Integrating messages through everyday life is how it’s done. I hope that my kids are soon begging me to buy fruits and vegetables, and if it because there is an Elmo sticker on the apple, then so be it. At least they are eating an apple. At least they are showing an interest. It’s a start to healthy habits.

At Fit Kids Playground, we fully believe that the younger generation holds the key through preschool education pertaining to healthy eating. The exposure alone at an early age will teach kids to learn about where their food comes from, that it is important to eat a rainbow and that they should be eating a fruit or vegetable with EVERY meal. There are simple ways to start to introduce these concepts early on, but “early on” are the key words.

So I will be on the look out in early 2014 for Big Bird Bananas or Red Delicious Elmo Apples…because that is what some of us already do, right? I’ve made my own Abby’s Amazing Apples with “magic sprinkles” on peanut butter on apples. (Try it for yourself! It worked! My daughter LOVED her apple snack!) You don’t need a license to get creative. You just need a little creative magic to get you thinking about a way to disguise asparagus. If you make it fun, 9 times out of 10, kids will respond. So it’s worth a try.

Do you have fun names for healthy food you cook that you market to your kids at your house? Tell us how you get them to eat healthy food! We are always looking for new ideas.

Insider Mom Tip: Eat a Rainbow of fruits and veggies everyday! We love the Today I Ate a Rainbow Chart that goes on your fridge and acts as a game! Hope on over and meet Kia, a Mom in action and on a mission to help kids eat healthier!

Playsmart’s Brains and Brawn Kids Adventure Challenge

We are so excited to see a new kind of adventure race! One that takes kids to use their brains on a higher level. PlaySmart, a national non-profit organization that provides athletic and academic opportunities to America’s youth, will host the 1st Annual “Brains and Brawn” Kids Adventure Challenge in Tampa Bay on November 10th, 2013 at Al Lopez Park. How much fun does this sound: climbs/slides, mud runs, slime tunnels, tire rolls, low crawl spaces, sprint races and other elements throughout the park will be what kids are challenged to achieve.

Team are encouraged to participate together to “think” about how to compete in these adventures. Have a really cool team name and gear? Could win you a prize! Healthy snacks will be provided by GoGo squeeZ. And of course, everyone who competes (ages 5-14) will receive a medal.
