I have always loved the circus. Everything about it was fun. My Dad always took us and we made the most of the day! Also, back in Wisconsin, I had the opportunity to visit Barnum, WI and actually be a part of the circus for a day! I told my Mom, I wanted to runaway with the circus…but I think she called my bluff as I had no clear talents to allow me to do that. But what if I did? Would she have let me?

At the BUILT TO AMAZE Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus Media Day event last week, I got a chance to see what behind the scenes circus people were really like. I think the public has a skewed perception of what “running away with the circus” is really like. Yes, first you must have a true talent to be a part of the show, but you also have to be a super dedicated, hard working individual who is passionate about performing and what your role is in the circus. I was so impressed with everyone whom I spoke with that it got me thinking about sometime else…

Let’s discuss the importance of parents fostering a love of an activity in our children that might one day allow them the opportunity to run away with the circus. I look at my daughter, Mia, who is 7 and is a member of the Tampa Gym and Dance Gymnastics team. She spends over 8 hours a week practicing. She is also beginning to learn the importance of healthy eating too. She is dedicated (yes, even at an early age) and she is willing to practice hard so that she can get better at what she does. I hope she will be inspired to always have a love for doing this fun activity and will also lead her to living ahealthy lifestyle too.

Above, I am pictured above with Elliana Grace, the 20 year old human cannonball…yes, that is what I said, THE HUMAN CANNONBALL. That was how she introduced her self. She was so impressive, that all I could think about when we were talking was that THIS could be Mia in 13 years!

I learned that she had grown up in the circus, literally. Her mother ran a circus in St. Louis and before she could remember, she was doing ariel gymnastics, horseback riding and lots of tumbling! Excited about having the opportunity to travel around the USA and Canada and Mexico by train, doing something she lows. That was the key. You could see it in her eyes. She enjoyed this whole experience- from living on a train to seeing the country to meeting new people! And, this was her first time ever being shot out of a cannon in front of an audience!

We talked for a while l offer about how important good physical health is to be a part of this team. She eats healthy and has a practice routine that is her full time job. It’s impressive that she, at 20, has found something she loves and is willing to peruse it as a career.

I hope that we all can foster a love of an activity in our children’s early years for them to be as passionate as Elliana is about what she is doing. It started when she was young. It always starts young. Good habits start young. Healthy habits start young. A little bit at a time.

Being that today is January 1st, and New Year’s resolutions are among us, I would like to hear what you all will be doing to foster healthy fit kids in your families this year! Will you try a new sport? Will you do an activity WITH your kids? Will you give them the opportunity to try something new that THEY want to try? Anything to get our kids off the couch and to push away the screen!! Once kids find something they enjoy doing, it’s hard to pry them away from doing it.
